Pirilampo (Firefly) is my third book as an author, published by Orfeu Negro in 2026.
When a stubborn sunbeam enters a dim room through a small breach in the window blinds and shines a tiny dot up on the wall, small as it may be, it feels as though a full day’s worth is peeking inside. We can feel the warmth of the sun and the rustle of leaves; we can almost smell the grass outside. There is a similar sunbeam inside all of us, we call it imagination, and it too, even if just a small speck, carries a full universe’s worth. When we’re children, we let it run wild and, so often, run wild ourselves. Later, when we’re bigger and the world feels smaller, we prefer to keep it enclosed, like a firefly inside a jar, lest it overwhelm us. A comforting light to gaze upon when the daylight chores have finally subsided. But still, it lights up our days, it is our very own super-power, even if just a speck, and it lets us imagine that the impossible is possible. Is it our friend, or our companion? Do we control it, or does it control us? This book explores the different ways it keeps close to us throughout our lives, seeing it through our protagonist’s eyes who, like us, keeps hers in a jar, like a firefly.
