INCM – Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda. I was invited by Casa da Moeda to design a commemorative 5 Euro coin, based on the theme of Homero’s Ulysses (Odysseus). The front shows Ulysses, wishing to hear the sirens sing, tied to the mast of his ship, so that he can do so without succumbing to madness. The back alludes to the mythical connection between Ulysses and the city of Lisbon, and the various popular tales tied to that theme. Ofíussa, the queen of the serpents, surrounds Ulysses, in the centre, and with each knot of her body molds the seven hills of the city around him.
